About the museumPaikkari Croft is one of the oldest museums in Finland. It depicts the humble beginnings from which Elias Lönnrot, the son of a Finnish-speaking rural family, emerged as a significant public educator and contributor to the Finnish language. Lönnrot was born in the cottage and lived there as a child.
Lönnrot’s most famous work is the Finnish national epic, Kalevala. The so-called Old Kalevala appeared in 1835 and contained 32 poems that he had collected during his collection trips. Lönnrot published the New Kalevala (usually known as Kalevala) in 1849. It contained 50 poems.
In the main room of the cottage, you can see Lönnrot‘s cradle and his kantele (a traditional Finnish string instrument). There are objects that Lönnrot used and made himself on exhibition in the chamber: a writing stand, a manuscript stand, and a bookcase.
